소프트뱅크그룹은 2025년 4월 2일과 3일, 단 이틀 만에 3,500건 이상의 특허를 공개하며 일본 내 특허 공개 순위 1위에 올랐습니다. 또한, 2025년 12월 일본의 특허 출원 건수는 전년 동월 대비 168.9% 증가한 약 8.2만 건을 기록하며, 지식재산 생태계의 구조적 변화를 시사하고 있습니다.

이러한 흐름은 거스를 수 없는 변화입니다. 다만 동시에, 특허 심사 부담 증가와 IP 투자 확대라는 새로운 과제도 함께 나타나고 있습니다.

국내 현황

선제적인 대응을 위해 국내에서도 변화는 이미 시작되었습니다. 특허로펌뿐만 아니라 AI 전문 IT 기업, IP 전문 서비스 업체 등 다양한 주체들이 발명신고서 작성, 선행기술조사, 명세서 drafting까지 지원하는 AI 기반 툴을 제공하고 있습니다.

그러나 모든 과정이 자동화될 수 있는 것은 아닙니다. 진보성 판단, 청구항 권리범위 설계, 도면 구성과 같은 정성적 영역에서는 여전히 특허 전문가의 역할이 핵심적입니다.

결국 앞으로의 IP 경쟁은 "얼마나 많이 출원했는가"가 아니라 "얼마나 전략적으로 설계된 포트폴리오를 보유하고 있는가"로 귀결될 것입니다.

The SoftBank case clearly illustrates how AI-driven strategies are accelerating the quantitative expansion of global patent filings. Patent competition is rapidly evolving beyond traditional filing activities toward AI-enabled large-scale production systems.

Notably, SoftBank Group disclosed more than 3,500 patent applications in just two days (April 2–3, 2025), ranking first in Japan for patent publications. In addition, Japan's total patent filings reached approximately 82,000 in December 2025, marking a 168.9% increase year-over-year—suggesting a structural shift in the IP landscape.

This shift appears irreversible. At the same time, it introduces new challenges, including increased examination burdens at patent offices and expanded investment in IP.

Korea's Response

This transformation is already underway in Korea. A wide range of players—including patent law firms, AI-driven IT companies, and IP service providers—are offering AI-based tools that support invention disclosures, prior art searches, and even specification drafting.

However, not every aspect of the patent process can be automated. In qualitative areas such as inventive step assessment, claim scope design, and drawing development, the role of patent professionals remains essential.

Ultimately, future IP competition will not be defined by how many patents are filed, but by how strategically a portfolio is designed.
